SUMMARY:Trip: Belmont Regional Park at Dry Creek Entrance
DESCRIPTION:We will climb for 40 minutes up the 4WD Buchanans Road Tramping Track\, passing Dendrobium cunninghamii\, Earina autumnalis\, Helichrysum lanceolatum and Metrosideros colensoi. \nFrom there we’ll walk bait lines and informal unformed tracks for a 90-minute circuit of Syzygium maire (maire tawake\, swamp maire). Botanising time will be additional to this. Bring good footwear and gaiters if you have them for waterlogged sites. There is one place with hip-stretching tall steps cut into soil. Areas can be slippery when wet. Hand ropes are beside steep mud steps. This is a 7.5km walk with moving time of around two and a half hours. \nThere is recent research on Syzygium maire in the Wellington region\, published by the School of Biological Sciences at Victoria University. The authors highlight that we ‘need to identify refugia in accessible\, albeit sometimes fragmented\, habitat’ and recommend ‘leveraging human–nature interactions in areas to create\, expand\, and protect habitat for [this] rare species in a rapidly changing world’. Syzygium maire has a threat classification of Threatened-Nationally Vulnerable. The research illustrates the preferred habitat of Syzygium maire is waterlogged areas. Such areas are few and shrinking\, both nationally and in Wellington region. \nThis trip will look at thriving Syzygium maire that have fruited and seeded in the rare wetlands below Boulder Hill. We’ll see Ramarama\, Threatened – Nationally Critical\, and Coprosma rubra\, At Risk – Declining and over 100 other plant species observed on iNaturalist. These can be seen in a map view of the proposed quarry Overburden Disposal Area. \nOminously there’s a Fast-track proposal to turn this precious area into a quarry overburden disposal area. This has been reported on by Radio NZ. The Friends of Belmont Regional Park and Wellington Botanical Society have strongly opposed this. The Fast-track application is here.  \nNon-members are welcome to join\, making it an excellent opportunity to explore this region’s native flora. \nMeet: Dry Creek Carpark\, Hebden Crescent\, Kelson\, Lower Hutt at 9.30am. This Carpark with toilets is a 10-minute walk from Manor Park Station on the Hutt Valley Line. Trains leave Wellington at 8.35am and arrive at Manor Park Station at 9.08am. \nLeader: John Barnett\, 021 063 1590\, johnbarnett@inspire.net.nz
