SUMMARY:Trip: Skyline Walkway
DESCRIPTION:Botanise part of the Skyline Walkway\, where wind and small-leaved shrubs dominate the vegetation. While at first glance the area appears to be mostly gorse\, Darwin’s barberry and pasture grasses\, there is a range of interesting native species present in the shrubland\, including some uncommon elsewhere in Wellington. The small-leaved shrubs include Melicytus crasssifolius\, Raukaua anomalus\, Neomyrtus pedunculata\, Lophomyrtus obcordata\, the hybrid Lophomyrtus × ralphii\, Dracophyllum filifolium and several Coprosma species. There’s also a range of interesting little plants\, including Hymenophyllum minimum\, Nertera depressa\, Leptostigma setulosum\, Leptinella squalida\, Syphelia nesophila\, Geranium brevicaule as well as bryophytes and lichens. \nMeet: \n9.30am – Meet at the start of Bell’s Track\, end of Awarua St\, Ngaio. Nearest public transport is Awarua St Station on the Johnsonville line\, around a 15-20 minute uphill walk. \nCo-leaders: \nMelanie Newfield\, phone 021 0835 5915\, email melanienewfield@theturnstone.nz.

SUMMARY:Weekend Trip: Allen’s Bush and Rewa Bush
DESCRIPTION:Note earlier than usual dates: 28 and 29 March \nWe will spend two days exploring some interesting but little-visited sites in the Wairarapa\, overnighting in Carterton. \nOn Saturday we will explore Allen’s Bush\, near Carterton\, and possibly the adjoining Lowe’s Bush\, if time permits. The swamp forest remnant comprising these two reserves has been described as “…the largest and most intact area of kahikatea swamp forest distinctive for its size\, maturity\, ecological diversity and condition within Wellington Conservancy\, if not the entire North Island…” and “…the best representative of the once extensive podocarp swamp forest of the Wairarapa Plains…”. (Beadel et al. 2020). Species of conservation interest in the remnant include Mazus novaezeelandiae subsp. novaezeelandiae\, Juncus distegus and Syzygium maire. \nOn the Sunday we will visit Rewa Bush Conservation Area\, a 1200ha area of indigenous forest east of Masterton containing significant amounts of old growth podocarp forest\, as well as beech forest. \nBeadel S\, Perfect A\, Rebergen A\, Sawyer J. 2000. Wairarapa Plains Ecological District. Survey report for the Protected Natural Areas Programme. Department of Conservation\, Wellington. \nGood footwear required. Maximum attendees 12. Please let Lara know if you intend to join us. \nMeet: 10am on the verge at 304 Hughes Line\, Carterton. \nAccommodation: Carterton Holiday Park which has a range of accommodation options. \nCo-leaders: \nLara Shepherd\, 027 363 5854\, lara.shepherd@tepapa.govt.nz \nPat MacLean\, phone 027 4066 767.
