DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Paul Bell-Butler and Lee Oliver\, Victoria University of Wellington. \nPaul—New Zealand’s bryophyte flora remains poorly understood – even basic knowledge is lacking for many liverwort species\, with 23% of taxa classified as ‘Data Deficient’. The genetic and biogeographic affinities of the country’s non-vascular flora are also only beginning to be explored. Using a multi-gene phylogeny of the family Lophocoleaceae incorporating global sampling\, we uncovered unexpected links between New Zealand species and northern hemisphere taxa\, including a New Zealand endemic whose closest relatives are in northern temperate regions. Several genera were also found to be polyphyletic.
